It’s important that Oregon legislators hear from people in their district. Please contact your state senator and ask him or her to stand up for people who have been harmed and to Restore Justice for Survivors.
Here are some talking points you can use:
If you have a personal story where you have been harmed by negligence, please share it.
My name is <YOUR NAME>. I am a constituent calling to urge <YOUR LEGISLATOR> to support HB 2014 which will restore justice for survivors and protect Oregonians’ constitutional right to a jury trial. Let our juries decide—not a one size fits all cap on holding wrongdoers accountable.
- I urge you to stand with the coalition working to protect people who have been harmed through no fault of their own.
- Putting limits on decisions of juries are counter to the will of the voters who have twice voted down such restrictions.
- The cap is arbitrary and in place no matter what the facts are, even in cases of serious harm or abuse. No matter how great the injury or disability, the cap stands. The cap is especially hard on children, seniors, persons with disabilities and the working poor.
- The cap is in place no matter what a jury decides – and jurors only learn of the cap after they have issued their ruling.
- The cap reduces incentives for corporations and other wrongdoers to behave responsibly and do the right thing.
